The Shape of Change
The practice unfolds through three connected stages: awareness, inner transformation and becoming. In Between begins with the acceptance of contradictions within the self and within relationships, exploring how difference, imperfection and opposing qualities can exist together without losing harmony. Inward turns towards the unseen fractures, private struggles and inner states that shape the process of change, reflecting a period of withdrawal where transformation takes place internally before it can be seen from the outside.
Becoming marks the movement out of this inward period and into a new stage of growth. The shift from heavier, darker stoneware forms to thinner white porcelain becomes part of the transformation itself. Floral and organic forms begin to emerge, suggesting renewal and the opening of a new chapter. The delicacy of porcelain exists alongside its durability, allowing sensitivity and strength to occupy the same form.
Together, the three series trace a continuous journey from awareness, through inner transformation, towards emergence, growth and becoming.

The parts could belong to a flower, a coral or a body. Assembled, they settle as none of them.
Ayse Nisa Akdemir (b. 1994, Colorado, USA) is a ceramic artist based in Istanbul. She makes sculptures by hand in stoneware and porcelain, concerned with transformation, duality and the states between one form and another. Built without a wheel or mould, each work is assembled from individually formed petals, coils and tendrils, and the marks of pressure and firing are left visible.
Her forms draw on plants, sea life and the human body. She uses the structures of flowers, leaves, seed pods and corals as a visual language for ideas about growth, protection and change.
Across three series, the work moves from polished and carved stoneware surfaces held on one body, to closed forms with small openings into broken interiors, to thin white porcelain that opens outward. The resulting objects sit somewhere between specimen and body, like organisms still in the process of growing.
