ABOUT
Ayşe Nisa Akdemir is a contemporary ceramic artist based in London whose work thoughtfully explores transformation, emergence, and the emotional resonance within the medium of stoneware. Initially drawn to creative expression through sculpture, Akdemir found her artistic voice in the tactile possibilities of clay, allowing intuitive discovery and material exploration to shape her practice.
Her work centers on relational dynamics such as proximity, tension, and coexistence. Inspired by the complexities of the natural world and human connection, Akdemir uses hand-building and slab construction techniques to create forms that invite reflection on vulnerability, contradiction, and the beauty of imperfection. Each series develops through material investigation and conceptual inquiry, blending traditional ceramics with contemporary perspectives.
Recurring themes in Akdemir’s pieces include asymmetry, contrast, and the act of merging distinct shapes and surfaces. She draws on personal narratives and cycles found in nature to communicate psychological and emotional depth. The construction and glazing of each work unfold through an organic process, balancing intention with improvisation and giving rise to surfaces that reveal the dynamic energy of stoneware.
Akdemir’s recent bodies of work include the "In Between" series, which challenges material compatibility and explores transformation within rigid forms, and the "Knots" series, focusing on binding, attachment, and the enduring complexity of relationships. Her work has been exhibited in London studios and engages with both ceramic traditions and critical dialogues in contemporary art.
Currently, Akdemir is developing new work inspired by themes of change and adaptation, experimenting with glazes that evoke the tangible passage of time. Her ongoing exploration of materiality and connection aims to open a dialogue about what it means to persist, adapt, and find unity within diversity.
Through her ceramics, Ayşe Nisa Akdemir invites viewers to contemplate the links between humanity and the environment, offering sculptural objects as markers of both personal and universal transformation.
